Portugal in Style
7-20 Sept 2027
In 2025 we had a great Tour to Portugal and ever since people have been asking when are we going back? Can we tune up the itinerary to make it even better? Can we go somewhere new? So the plan here is to take the best of previous trips, add in some new things and return to some knock-out locations. It will be a relaxed tour as the mileages are not enormous and there are as many two night stops as we can manage to give both cars and drivers a rest. The Vintage House at Pinhao will be epic, Porto will be bustling and at Serta nothing will be too much trouble. Of course we have to go through Spain, but both Leon and Hacienda Zorita are five star establishments and we don’t want anything but the best stops, best routes and best time!
| Tues 7 Sep | Late Afternoon departure from Plymouth on Brittany Ferries Pont Aven |
| Wed 8 Sep | Arrive in Santander late afternoon and then drive 5 miles to the Hotel Chiqui on the Sardinero. Brittany Ferries’ new schedule precludes long runs on the first day so we have a very comfortable hotel with a reputation for great food and views out over Santander bay |
| Thurs 9 Sep | Let’s head to Portugal! Drive 160 miles to Leon where we stay in the wonderful five star Parador. Situated in the city centre (but with easy and secure parking) the hotel dates from the C16th. There is much to see and do in Leon so it’s a great stop. Can you find the Lion? |
| Fri 10 Sep | Drive 200 miles into Portugal to Pinhao which is on the upper reaches of the Douro River. Our luxury hotel overlooks the river and there are opportunities for boat trips as well as joining the historic Douro Valley steam train. 2 nights here |
| Sun 12 Sep | Drive 80 miles West to Porto where we have two nights at the Freixo Palace Hotel, a wonderful and stylish conversion of an old flour mill together with the original chimney still in place. We hope to arrange a visit to a Port Lodge and if there are sufficient numbers, a boat trip on the Douro |
| Tues 14 Sep | It’s 120 miles to Serta close to Castillo Branco and a great place to explore the countryside and the three large nearby lakes on the Rio Zezere. It should be possible to do drive outs to Coimbra or Castelo Branco. With only 25 rooms at the hotel it will be more like a house party |
| Thur 16 Sept | It’s just on 200 miles to Ledesma, where we are booked into Hacienda Zorita. Those who have stayed before will know how special it is, built in a medieval watermill cum monastery and frequented by Columbus. Two nights here and a chance for a day in Salamanca |
| Sat 18 Sept | Drive 160 miles to Lerma for our last night and a chance to reflect and review—in a Palace of course at the stunning Parador of Lerma |
| Sun 19 Sept | Drive 155 miles to Santander ferry port to board Brittany Ferries Santona |
| Mon 20 Sept | Arrive Portsmouth late afternoon |
