Aston Martin and the Spanish Alonso Trail
25 June –6 July 2025
Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin gave us the impetus for two great tours in 2023 and ‘24. No-one really wanted to go home so for 2025 we’ve added a night or two extra to get us to some amazing places. After the Ferry from Santander, we’re going to Leon for two nights—it’s a five star Parador but easy to get to the Alonso Museum for those who want to go (If you haven’t you should!). Next we go to Ciudad Rodrigo where Wellington and Napoleon clashed, next to Guadalupe where they built gates to keep the pilgrims out! Toledo is next and it’s a world heritage city—fantastic driving on the way there! Our last two stops are another castle at Siguenza and finally Argomaniz close to Napoleon’s last stand in Spain.
On Saturday it’s a short hop to Bilbao for the Ferry Home to Portsmouth
Wed 25 June | Afternoon departure from Plymouth on Brittany Ferries Pont Aven |
Thur 26 June | Arrive in Santander and drive 165 miles to Leon for two nights in the
stunning Parador. The Fernando Alonso Museum is just 70 miles away on a fast road |
Sat 28 June | Drive 179 miles past Salamanca to Ciudad Rodrigo which controlled the crossing to Portugal during the Napoleonic wars. It’s a walled city and the recently refurbished Parador is a castle and the highest point in town. Lots of history here! 2 nights here |
Mon 30 June | Drive 175 miles next to Portugal before cutting inland at Caceres to go to Guadalupe, the second most venerated spot for pilgrims in Spain. The town is tiny, the Monastery enormous and the hotel is a C14 convent with a brilliant interior square |
Tues 1 July | Toledo today! But before that, the greatest driving road in Spain – more fun going North and a great start to a day which finishes in a great historic city—two nights here. The view from the cafeteria terrace is unsurpassed |
Thur 3 July | We head around the south of Madrid to go to Siguenza, a medieval castle and yet another overlooking the town. People love it and the 190 miles to get there includes some further great driving roads |
Fri 4 July | Drive 185 miles through the Rioja to the little town of Argomaniz where Napoleon spent his last night in Spain before losing the Battle of Vitoria. The numbers staying in the Parador often exceeds the number living in the town |
Sat 5 July | Drive 50 miles to Bilbao for lunchtime departure on Brittany Ferries Galicia |
Sat 6 July | Afternoon arrival at Portsmouth |
